14 MILLION DOLLARS IN CONTINUED SWEDISH SUPPORT FOR
BASIC EDUCATION
On 7 January 2002, Sweden signed an agreement with UNICEF regarding a
contribution of 146 million Swedish kronor (about 14 million USD) for the
Expanded Basic Education Programme for four years (2002-2005). The
contribution forms a part of long-term development cooperation between
Sweden and Cambodia in the education sector. A corresponding bilateral
agreement will be signed with Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport
representing the Royal Government on 31 January 2002.
The funds will be channelled through UNICEF and the Ministry of Education,
Youth and Sport and UNICEF will jointly implement the programme. This
Expanded Basic Education Programme is a continuation of a long-term Swedish
assistance to basic education in Cambodia. Sweden has in the past provided a
total 16,5 million Swedish Kronor in support of the education sector. The
current programme is made up of two sub-programmes, focusing on gradually
implementing a broader sector wide approach and continuing to provide
education services in selected provinces, which will help to bring local
experiences into the policy development process and at the same time
contribute to the improved quality, equitable access to schooling (for both
girls and boys) and decentralized management of education services.
