Cambodia
Cambodia has a population of just over 12 million [2002] with around 3.3 million students. The net enrolment rate for children aged 6-12 is 92% and for 13-17 year olds it is 13%. There are 6500 schools with approximately 90,000 teachers, 38% of them female. The issues that the education sector faces include restoring infrastructure, achieving equity across its various provinces and dealing with natural disasters such as floods. Cambodia has invested heavily in education and has a strategic plan in place running to 2005. It has an "education for all' vision and receives extensive foreign aid to assist it achieve that goal. Mongolia
Mongolia has a population around 2.5 million and approximately 650,000 students. In its 8-17 year old group, the net enrolment rate is about 89% with kindergarten much lower at 36%. It has around 700 schools and just over 20,000 teachers, of which around 80% are female.
It faces a number of constraints, the scattered population, poverty, cold weather that pushes up education costs for heating and the provision of dormitories. It is grappling with many issues including sustaining quality, effectively deploying staff, addressing gender school population and teacher imbalances. It does have a 2000-2005 Education Strategy and is currently implementing government legislation that sets up performance and resourcing agreements between levels of government.
